Rain Rain GO AWAY

Saturday, December 19, 2009

..And don't come back for days and days!

If you have been watching the weather (or experiencing it), you'll know that we have been hit with record rains here in the southeast; flooding is rampant.  The horses are miserable, and every bit as cranky as we are at the current state of sogginess. Thankfully, the house in the photo below is not ours...although we have standing water here too, it is not at flood stages (except for the Moo Crew's stalls, that is, which are now ankle deep in water). Since the horses are only in the stalls twice a day to eat, it's not a complete disaster (it sure would be miserable if they had to stay in there though).

Happily, Rickey has found someone that owns a dump truck and may be able to help us get some dirt; of course we have to wait for it to dry up enough for him to get in there...otherwise he'd just get stuck (kind of like the farm truck did last week when we dropped more hay - took us an hour and a half to get it out...grrr :oP

The horses do like to play in the rain, especially when the temperature drops.  The cooler temperatures not only give them lots more energy, but the running and jumping around also helps them to stay warm.

The photo below turned out so well, I ended up listing it as a print in my Etsy shop.  I entitled it, "Pinging in the Rain" after one of my favorite old movies (plus it was a really bad pun, which just I love :o)

Of course after the pinging, comes the rolling...

Woo-Hoo! Today is Saturday, and Here comes the sun....HOT DAWG!!

A Note from the Girls:

Not only is there sunshine, but Mrs. Ladyperson [Jen] let us in the riding area where there is Winter Rye Grass coming up.

HOORAY!

So tell me, how's the weather at your house? Have you had oodles of rain or snow? Or did you manage to miss all the fun (sarcastically speaking, that is :o)

  1. Oh ICK! that sucks girlfriend! We've just been having freezing temps - too cold for snow, exposed skin freezes in minutes, that sort of thing...rain like that sucks! I hope you guys stay above water...
    Hugs and prayers,
    Meg and Arwen

  2. Meg & Arwen: Well now I'm thinking "too cold for snow" is no more fun that sloshing around in the chilly damp. We'll stay dry if you stay warm, how about it? :o)

  3. The horses sure look like they have a lot of fun in the rain! We have been getting a lot of rain up here in Oregon but at least it's in the 50s cause rain and cold is awful. I always feel sorry for the horses out in the rain but now I'll know that they do enjoy it - sometimes at least!

  4. Sending you sunshine! ;0) Happy horses though, great to see and I love the new print photo for your shop, so beautiful and full of great energy and horsey joy! Say hi to them all, lots of neck pats from me! Michele

  6. BeadedTail: I think the novelty of the rain definitely wore off over the last week (or two). They sure were happy to run around under a clear blue sky with lots of sunshine yesterday though (me too, me too!)

Mvegan: Hey Michele! Thanks for the kind words on the print (although we won't say just how long I stood outside in the yucky drizzle to get it (hee).

Fishhawk: Thank you for your kind words - every once in awhile it pays off to use up an entire roll of film :o)

  7. We've had snow here and I can't believe I'm going to say this but I would rather have the snow than all that rain. The dampness from the rain always makes me feel tired. Love those pictures

  8. Oh that is a lovely photo of the horses! It must be difficult todeal with all that mud, when I had my doggie we called them "muddy paw" days...hope it all dries up. Here in the northeast we're having a snowstorm but it's not all that bad, powdery snow that's easy to shovel...so far!

  9. Ann: I'd take the snow too (except that I've done the math:
    Southerners + Snow
= too many Masters of DISASTER :o)

Rebecca: You are so right; the mud is awful, although it CAN be entertaining. DD let out a big "WOO!" the other day a nanosecond before she busted her tail right in front of Lady's stall. It was on a nice big patch of the superduper slick stuff; I was a good mom though and asked her if she was all right before laughing hysterically - hee).

  10. We have had snow, snow and more snow. Actually, it isn't that bad, just enough that I can't get out to the store. I hope everything dries soon.

  11. Rain rain rain over here. Where are you? I'm in South Florida and it's been miserable... but today is BEAUTIFUL! Hope it all dries up for you soon. Gorgeous pictures!

  12. Oh yes, I know that soggy feeling. We had all of the same rain. It was horrible and my goat and my donkey barn flooded. The donkey barn only flooded up to the beginnings of the stalls. So I know just how you feel. That is a great picture of the horses romping to get warm. I was really thankful too to see the sun. We live in upstate SC.

  13. SmallTown: Shovel-shovel-shovel...Just don't go getting cabin fever on us, okay? I miss the snow, but not the slush and sleet (blech :oP

DailyCute: We are in south Alabama, so you probably got the same nasty mess we had. Whoopee, right? We were beginning to contemplate life preservers for the horses when the sun finally came back out (whew! :o) Thank you for your kind comments on the photos.

Marg: I'm so sorry about your barn! Will it dry out? I sure hope so - I imagine your four-legged furballs would like to go back "inside" soon. Thank you so much for the compliment!

  14. You're right, that picture of the horses playing is a really good one. It'sa shame about all of the flooding. We've been lucky here around Detroit, and there hasn't been too much bad weather, only a little snow.

  15. Ratty: I wondered at the lack of white stuff in your photos :o) Are you running below average for snowfall this year? We are (obviously) waaaay above average for the rainfall this month :oP Thanks for the kind words about the photo!

  16. I sure wish I could roll around in some muds! It has been extra cold even here in south Florida; we're not used to it. I am spending time in my heated cat cup.

  17. Daisy: Hmmmm...A heated cat cup you say? I wonder if you can get those things in people sizes (I'm freezing! :o)

  18. Although we have stalls for our horses where they can find shelter it seems they prefer to stay outdoors...rain, snow, or shine!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Carol: Ours are exactly the same, every once in awhile they will "hang out" in the stalls but for the most part they prefer to stay outside no matter what the weather. Thanks for the comment! :o)
